Overview
During this project, we developed a meniscus grasper, going through the full medical device design cycle. We measured tissue properties, applied reverse engineering, created a CAD model, and iteratively redesigned our tool. Finally, we fabricated and assembled the prototype, tested its functionality, and refined the design, gaining hands-on experience in conceptualization, analysis, and surgical tool development.
Challenges
- 01Accurately measuring and characterizing meniscal tissue properties
- 02Reverse engineering existing designs while improving functionality
- 03Balancing precision grip with minimal tissue trauma
- 04Optimizing for surgical ergonomics and sterilization requirements
Outcomes
- 01Developed a functional prototype meeting surgical requirements
- 02Gained hands-on experience in surgical tool development
- 03Validated tissue interaction mechanisms through testing
- 04Documented design rationale and manufacturing specifications
