SunBuddySmart UV Wearable Bracelet
Smart wearable bracelet designed to make the invisible threat of UV radiation visible, audible, and personal. SunBuddy measures the actual UV intensity your skin is exposed to in real time and it watches over you all day and debriefs you every evening through the Bluetooth connected app.

Overview
Developed a wearable ecosystem designed to make the invisible threat of UV radiation visible and actionable. Unlike traditional weather apps, SunBuddy measures personal UV intensity in real-time via a wrist-worn device. The system integrates an ESP32-based hardware stack with a Swift iOS application, providing visual alerts when exposure thresholds are exceeded. For the hackathon presentation, I built a website using Windsurf to showcase the device and preventative health mission.
Challenges
- 01Miniaturizing hardware components (ESP32, UV sensor, battery) into an ergonomic wearable form factor
- 02Establishing reliable real-time data streaming via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) between hardware and iOS
- 03Ensuring sensor placement accuracy to prevent casing obstruction of UVR measurement
- 04Rapidly developing a high-fidelity project website to present the device concept within a 24-hour hackathon timeframe
Outcomes
- 01Won 1st Place in the Healthcare Category at the MITMake x Harvard Hackathon
- 02Built a fully functional prototype from sensor-to-screen with real-time data visualization
- 03Programmed the ESP32 for UV data acquisition and BLE communication protocols
- 04Developed a responsive project website using Windsurf to facilitate device presentation
- 05Integrated ElevenLabs Voice AI to provide personalized health debriefs based on individual UV exposure data
